OT: offshore crane collapse

Would be a lot more interesting with some background on why it collapsed. A lot more.

This occured less than 9 hours ago so we probably have to wait for a while for more info. Said somewhere that cable broke and caused the failure.

To me it looks like the crane was still under construction and something failed in the erection? (yeah, need more than viagra now)

Breaking: New heavy-lift crane due to work at giant Scottish wind project 'collapses' - News for the Oil and Gas Sector

"The incident happened in Rostock, Germany, while undergoing load tests.

A few people are understood to have suffered minor injuries.

Deme Offshore said in a statement: “A serious accident has occurred today on board of offshore installation vessel ‘Orion 1’ at the occasion of and during crane load tests.

“The vessel is under construction and owned by Cosco (Qidong) Offshore Co.

“The vessel is moored at the quayside at the Liebherr construction yard in Rostock, with the crane undergoing several load tests.

“Reportedly, a few persons suffered minor injuries.

“The vessel is expected for delivery to DEME NV in the second half of May 2020.

“The crane has suffered significant damage, while damage to the crane and the vessel will be investigated in the upcoming days and weeks.”

Well it does not look like the load test went well. I guess better there then with something important on the hook.

"Chinese built Orion ship survives even if uncle bubmblefuck installed collapsing crane in Germany"

It's bit hard to imagine the scale of this thing. 10x 800kW electric drives for lifting

It appears that the boom was over-rotated past vertical -- in the video you can see the yellow hook assembly is on the wrong side, it is supposed to be hanging off to the left instead of laying up against the pedestal.

Human and/or computer programming error I should think. A really expensive one too.

On edit -- could also have been a ship ballasting error causing a list, bringing the crane over-vertical.

Regards.

Mike

Read from somewhere that cable broke in loading test.

Video starts in the middle of the action but:
If the load was close to ship the boom has been almost upright and ship has been ballasted to max on opposite side. Cable snapping would rock the ballasted ship and tilt the boom over center and fold it over the A-pillar

stretched cables acting like springs probably helped to yank the boom over also when the strapping or the hook failed

here's a better resolution video of the damage

Looks like only part of the crane hook on the end of the cables?

ndr.de translation also sounds like the same:

After the crane accident on Saturday afternoon in the Rostock overseas port, the police assume that the damage will be between 50 and 100 million euros. A spokesman for the crane manufacturer affected, Liebherr, on the other hand, said that nothing could be said about the damage. According to the latest findings, a total of twelve people were injured in the accident on the Liebherr site, most of them slightly. According to the current investigation, the cause could have been a material defect. The hook of the crane was broken during the lifting, said a police spokesman. During a test, the heavy-duty crane mounted on the "Orion" ship was to lift a pontoon weighing 5,500 tons, which lay next to the "Orion" in the water. When the hook broke, the crane's almost vertical boom jerked backwards and hit the ship and the quay edge. "The crane was under extreme tension. The jerky demolition caused the crane to tip over backwards," the spokesman continued.
