This means that such a large jump will affect far more than the relatively small percentage that actually make minimum wage, something like the 43% or so noted to make under $15. Artificially raise the wage for anywhere near 43% of workers in a mostly free market economy and you most certainly will trigger substantial inflation to re-balance the economy. In a year or so the hours worked to purchasing power ratio will be back to about where it was for the lower end, there will be little to no effect on the high end, and the middle will be further decimated.

A very similar effect was seen when the percentage of dual income families of two moderate wage earners became sufficiently high, the economy re-balanced to absorb that excess income and as a result it became much more difficult for a family to have a reasonable standard of living on a single moderate income. This forced a lot of families to become "dual income" to cover the inflationary increases, with a large amount of side effects ranging from those who could only get a lower end second income falling further behind, to having both parents working and thus less parental involvement with children producing the last generation or two of children and now voters who have been shaped by socialist media and left wing teachers due to the lack of contact with their struggling parents to see how the real world really works.

Ultimately it is important to understand what has happened over the last few decades and learn from those mistakes, however it is not possible to repair the damage done or get back to the prior state. We are at a point now where change is coming very quickly, populations continue to grow and the total number of jobs continues to shrink. As can be readily seen in the underdeveloped / developing world, when you simply do not have reasonable jobs for 50%+ of your population you have no stability and only breed crime, terrorism, etc.

Online shopping is entirely eliminated brick and mortar retail, where once the warehouses serviced the retail stores, the warehouses now directly service the consumers. With retail dead, the retail store jobs are obviously gone, but the indirect jobs that supported the retail stores like HACR construction and maintenance, roofing, parking lot maintenance, remodeling, etc. are also decimated. Yes there are still retail stores, but they are disappearing fast and the Covid mess has only made the loss more rapid.

Automation has steadily reduced all manner of employment for many years, however now combined with AI it is advancing far more rapidly replacing many of the remaining jobs that were previously too variable for old school automation. A factory long ago may have employed 1,000 persons to produce a product, conventional automation reduced that to 250 persons and AI based automation will reduce it to 10 persons.

Even at the very bottom end, migrant farm workers harvesting crops are now being replaced with more automation. AI and robotic advances now allow for automated harvesting of produce that was previously too delicate to harvest with automation. The companies that produce those robots use automation themselves in producing the robots and as such they are driving another massive loss of employment. Think 25 people working for the company producing harvesting robots that replace tens of thousands of migrant farm workers.

You have a bit of a bubble in the medical field currently, driven at least in part by Covid, however that is a very fleeting bubble. There have already been at least two sizable studies that have shown that AI performs at least as well as human doctors, really better than since the AI has been shown to miss less and misdiagnose less. You are already beginning to see doctors "assisted" by AI, and it won't be long before the economic pressures replace high paid doctors with much more cost effective and scaleable AI. With those high paid doctor jobs also go much of the support staff as well. AI doc orders tests and a much lower paid support person collects the blood, etc. to send to the lab. The lab is already quite automated and will only become more so, further reducing what used to be decent paying employment. Eventually as people become more comfortable with robotics, the robots will directly collect the samples and there go more jobs.

I think we are probably less than 25 years from that 50%+ unemployment in the developed world at the rate we are going. We need to be urgently working on a solution for a sustainable society that is not based on the no longer sustainable concept of everyone getting a job to support themselves. If we don't figure this out, the developed world will regress to what we see in the developing world and the world will descend into a new dark age of conflict, tribalism, etc.
Federal minimum wage hasn't changed in something like 13 years now. Also, the $15/hour minimum wage isn't expected to take full effect until 2025. It boggles my mind that there are some people in our country who are so selfish as to not care if people can eat. And don't give me the old song and dance about people getting a better education to get better wages. Everyone can't be a CEO. Someone needs to do the work.

I dislike wikipedia but at least you don't have to block ten *.cdn.* domains when you go there

Apparently it's up to $900,000 in a depressed area now, or 2 mil in a normal spot. Was a half mil in a place like Deetroit, hi Bob

The attraction was in the lowest cost road, for the people we heard from. Had a couple of ideas that could have been a benefit but didn't work out. Naturally, no fatass legislator or lawyer would have made any money, just some poor people.

Of course, looking at the wiki page Congress just had to butcher an okay idea so their buddies could cut a fat hog. The "regional process center" is that tool. Glass-Steagal was 23 pages and worked, Barney Frank 2,000+ and does nothing.

wtf can you say ? I wish the bin Laden Boys had hit Congress instead of the wtc. I'd happily take every single one of those venal worthless bastards and flush them. Or line them up against a wall ... pieces of shit they are, unh-hunh, unh-hunh.

I swear, just about everything you look at in the governance of the US now makes you want to throw up. Can those assholes do anything right ?

Prior to 2001 there were border crossings in Texas that were completely unmanned, if the river was low you could walk across or drive, if the river was flowing there was a ferry boat, operated by a Mexican family, no border guards to be seen. Few miles into town for cheap beer and good food, did it more than a few times myself.

I know how my family got to the USA, I can trace my roots from Texas, to Mexico, to Kentucky, it gets a little muddy past that. How about you?

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I've spent a fair amount of time living near the border in the winter time and plan to do even more of that. It seems odd that people from Wisconsin and the upper east coast are so concerned about the brown people down south.

Old study that I think was de-bunked - the study was about blood type, the story was about 1/4 of the offspring could NOT have been the result of the parents'
    blood types.

Hmm. Not really a study. Just anectdotal. Link to pdf of an interesting paper. "Rampant Misattributed Paternity...."

You might consider how much of that property is owned by somebody. in a communist and sometimes as socialist state People owning property is out or so out of reach they cant consider owning much more than their bole of rice.

Qt; perfect, yet you are a trumper,

It is hard to imagine that people who never hated anyone in their whole life hate T so bad that they can't even think about anything else. That kind of thinking is so unrealistic that I think it is the result of brainwashing. It seems that likey some people can't sleep at night with not dreaming about how much they hate somebody.

This country is in sorry shape if people can be led so easily.

We need soon celebrate double gas prices and double electric prices ..goody.

Oh I thought somebody was calling me a trumpet.

We have to get over that and not worry about getting even with T ,, but focus on what is good for our country and our economy.

If the world wants to save the world that should be fair, they should do some part and help pay for things..We can't do all the suffering and paying while they are allowed more pollution for the next 30 years.

I am not advocating an open border, but the 100% exclusion policy is not an acceptable alternative. Spring is coming, how many of you are packing up the family to follow the harvests?
First, the "fastlane" exists for a very simple economic reason that needs no explanation, and it exists for just about every country in the world.
But that kind of "legalization" is so rare that there are actually more one legged blonde transvestites swim across the Rio Grande daily.

The filing of the documents cost the same for everyone, except those with the thicker wallet can afford the honest immigration attorney to do the necessary legwork to speed up the process.
Otherwise, there are and always were quotas from geographical regions. That system worked for quite a while, but it got broken somewhere along the way.
There can be an argument made where, when and why did it break, but I ain't going there because it's a useless discussion since none of us can do a freakin' thing about it.
Fix the system first, but note that carte-blanche legalization, sanctuary cities and the like are NOT fixing the system, rather breaking it further.

As far as the harvester thing, that is the typical red herring for every occasion the question of immigration comes up.
First, just as there are H1B visas for techno-wizards, it should be extended to all fields of work, including farming.
Second - and You ain't gonna like this - just as H1B visas are blind to race and origin, so should the farming Visas be. IOW anyone with the means of traveling to the US on their own
can apply, not just those that can swim.

    Bundy was small-time.

    Compare him to Trump.

With no effort at all, "TDS" has granted DJT free leaseshold's on vacant minds, in perpetuity, and as a gift, donated by insanely dedicated volunteers.

He didn't have to file any papers. He has no costs at all. He probably never even heard the name "Jim Rozen".

And yet "TDS" has given him ownership, probably beyond your life-span?

I did say Bundy was small time?

I'm sorry but to my way of thinking, the biggest mistake in recent years immigration-wise was Teddy Kennedy's push to switch from skills-and-talent-oriented residence to relative-oriented. Just because you are the cousin of a citizen doesn't mean you yourself will make a good addition to the country, imo.
