OT- "Sparkling" water with flavors..... any more fattening than plain water ?

Such as Perrier in lime, lemon and watermelon flavors.....supposedly with added taste via oils somehow rather than sugar or artificial sweetener. (although I don't know of too many "oils" that taste like lemon, lime or watermelon).

Discovered I like the stuff to sip on while driving especially and that way get more water....but wonder if plain water still better health wise ? Anyone know the scoop on this ?

Just out of curiosity, why does it seem so hard to believe that one can add flavor without sweeteners? Citrus extract oils are commonly available. Have you ever squeezed a slice of lime into a glass of water?

Family history of Diabetes? Beat that "sweeteners" crapola half a century ago and counting.

Squirt of lemon or lime into a plain water of choice. Unsweetened tea (Chinese thing we are batf**k daft for putting sugar or milk in tea.

Tibetans disagree, use Yak butter. Not always rancid, even. You'd have to be really COLD to appreciate that as a life-saver. I have been. It was.

Try also "Yerba Mate" (Wegman's carry it, brewable and in cans..) as a refresher if you can stand the caffeine boost when driving.

No need of sugars. LESS need, yet, of the chemical substitutes. Poisons in their own right, many are.

The "scoop" is on the package label in plain English. First find the calorie value. Plain water is zero. "Fattening" stuff has a value above zero. Five or ten calories in a bottle will not be significant. Several hundred will affect your diet. Calories can come from carbohydrates like sugar and starch or can come from fats/oils, or a combination of the two classes of ingredients. The more of those things, the better it tastes, of course, and I have the waistline to prove it.

I think there is a bit more to Milacrons questioning than just calories.

Aspertane and other chemicals have no caloric value, but have been proven
to effect weight, and do damage.

Flavored seltzer water = zero calories. In my case this replaces quinine water, which I *thought* had fewer calories than,
say, a coke.

Wrong.

Data were on the label, plain as day.

Other option is H2ofO, right from the aqueduct.....

You are wrong about that as artificial sweetened soft drinks are zero everything and yet still as fattening, if not more so, than the full sugar versions. FWIW, the bottle of Perrier watermelon flavor beside me is also zero everything except calcium, which is 4%,

Why drinks like diet Coke are fattening is controversial but two theories are they make you more hungry, the other being that anything sweet calories or not, causes an insulin release. Perrier flavored is not really "sweet" per se.

No but if I did I guarantee it would add some sugar content from the natural lime fruit.

Not by much! And we DO need and metabolize "some" sugars. Just not the effing insane overload in packaged stuff.

LaCroix waters package that approach. And don't suit my palate. At all.

Wegman's house-brands a few flavours that DO work for me.

My fave is Gerolsteiner with the merest squirt from one of those handy plastic lemon or lime "hand grenades".

It dasn't really take much at all ...ONCE .. you have weaned yerself clear OFF the sugar-pops that have been dulling your sense of taste for ages.

Same again, if not more so with SALT. Takes a while to embed those changes. Also avoiding hormone-laced meats, and too damned MUCH meat vs fresh veg, fruits, and tree-nuts. Goober-peas need not apply. Those are for fattening Hogs. Four legged OR two legged.

:(

Pays off, and "bigtime", that sort of sane and austere traditional diet. No "fad" to it.

And then.. one can stack-arms now and then and enjoy an excursion OFF it.

If you can get it back there, try the Crystal Geyser raspberry flavor. Also not very sweet and the flavor is not too strong ...

Yeah, we're old. Do whatever you like, it's not going to make that much difference at this point.

The headline was, "Sparkling" water with flavors..... any more fattening than plain water ?"

I looked at some Perrier flavored water labels on Amazon and saw the labels say zero calories and no mention of sweeteners in the ingredients, just carbonated mineral water and "natural flavors." I did not see carbon dioxide listed, but that is how they carbonate the water. Mineral water is water with impurities (mineral salts) added. Carbon dioxide in water forms small quantities of carbonic acid. Some people think carbonated water harms teeth. So plain distilled water is the safest to drink, but it does not taste good. We make compromises with everything we eat or drink. There is or was a school of thought that the worst tasting water is the best for your health. Places around the world have built up tourist business and mineral water bottling empires based upon that premise. I tried the water flowing from a fountain at Saratoga Springs, NY and decided I don't need to be so healthy that I would drink that stuff, but it used to be very popular, along with the baths and gambling casino.

Your OWN quote LVanice, from posting #4.

I dis-agree, and apparently your memory don't recall a few years back where the OP was posting actual reports of "zero calorie" additives like aspertane,
causing weight gain.....odd concept eh ?

Asparta-wot-the f**k can predictably execute a "core dump" on my system almost exactly 15 minutes after consumption.

What's ODD is that is almost identical to the same effect and same TIMING that Salmonella has.

I otherwise have immunity to the whole tribe of Dr. Salmon's discoveries, some thanks to an original plus nine or more "booster" shots at taxpayer's expense, the rest from .. "travels".

Go figure..

"Sparkling" water as already mentioned is acidic

Your body maintains balanced pH by leaching calcium from your body and your bones.
distilled water is too pure and also acidic because of that.

Plain old water is better.

Our well water is hard and builds in a calcium and other trace mineral source too.

Tap water = or tap water through a carbon filter for taste is a good solution

I find it easier to drink if it's cold.
I freeze half or whole plastic bottles and drink as they melt.

Im willing to bet if you just stop 200 yards short and push the thing the final bit you could damn near drink anything you want from the fatening point of view and probably only experience a increase in muscle mass.

End of the day your body is getting something with a taste IE not water ergo it may well have the strange effect of a diet soft drink. Gotta understand we have very much always played life on converting energy into work, only in very recent history have we not required our bodies to do that.

FYI i like the unfiltered under ground tap water here, thoes minerals must be usefull?

My wife had kidney problems/ failure. Her doctor told her to drink a large amount of water a day. She drank Wal-Mart flavored water. Said the stuff was pretty good. Went to the doctor the following week and he said to stop the flavored water of any kind. It was not a substitute for water. Went farther and said it wouldn't help at all. I'm no Doc. we took his word for it.

Yeah in reading further about this via Google links I am finding out flavored carbonated water makes your kidneys work harder. But then some say yeah, but only minutely so, so no big deal...so jury is still out on this IMHO. Plus there are differences in the flavor....LaCrox for example has way more flavor and "sweetness" than Perrier. Plus Perirer is natural carbonation....dunno if that matters or not. Still in your wife situation I agree, take no chances.

I have noticed I seem to pee less volume from Perrier drinking compared to similar volume of pure water...not sure if that is good or bad, but suspect it is bad.
