It does take forever, even with some of the super fast packages it still takes a good chunk of time. Most do it in the background or use another computer.

I think start it at night and hope it finishes before morning? I have had 1/2 hour videos take 4 or 5 hours if I recall. But usually I just start them when I am not using my computer and just let them run

Internet connections, you have to look at upload speed though as that is the major rate limiting factor.

Even worse, imagine we had to go back to dialup...I couldn't imagine trying to browse today's content on 56k (which was usually only 33.6 or 2i.8) lol

One issue is the internet service being used. For the vast majority the upload speed is a fraction of the download speed. For example Charter/Spectrum's flagship package is 100Mbps download but that package only supports 10Mbps upload.
