Bit OT but I'm sure others hare have gone through this.
Figured I should replace the antique business cards I had made decades ago they don't have my regular email or my cell number (handy to have and I very occasionally do a bit of consulting).

So that made me think I should come up with a name to use (check). That makes me think I should take out the domain name and use it for the email... next figure I should have the ability to put up a simple web site (don't want the free ones that have adverts to make them free).

So start looking around and there are a bewildering variety of of hosting companies and options.
Cheap intro rates that go up after the first year. Strikes me as similar to the old situation with phone companies where they all wanted you to switch. Sign up for a cheap one, next year see if they will maintain the discount or switch to a new provider.

Right now I think I just need the domain name, email (which looks like you forward to a gmail account or similar), and the ability to do a simple web site.

What have others done, and any recommendations on providers?

Thanks
Paul

I use iPage, for my websites and for emails. Website Hosting | Unlimited Hosting With A Free Domain Name - iPage Easy to setup and they have different email plans with web-based (OX Mail) / outlook based via exchange. You can also use Google Mail with iPage.

Cheers ....

To use the car analogy - not interested in high end or luxury versions think Honda civic or Toyota. If needs expand in the future I can move everything to a different provider.
On budget - did not set one, but thinking I would like to be in the area of $60/yr.

Do not need to make sales via the web site (for foreseeable future).

Used to be able to wander around unix systems. Worked for a variety of computer companies, as a ME not software.

Will look at ipage some more (they are one of the ones that show up in lists of low cost hosting.
Thanks

Paul,

I have found them to be more responsive than other providers I have used over the years. I have never had any problems with downtime with email or websites.

But again everyone needs to decide for themselves.

Good Luck.

Cheers ....

Nothing but good things to say about hostgator and bluehost. Extremely responsive in the very rare occasion I run into problems. I have standard and VPS hosting with them.

I have used Ipower the last 10 or 12 years.
You can get started with a domain and everything else for less than $4 a month.

I usually end up paying $60 or $80 a year to renew.

Like most anything Internet....
They are as easy to hate and be pissed about as any....

A lot of the cheaper providers are owned by the same two or three parent companies. I believe all of the above fall into this group. However I use ipage as well. I think with most you can get in for about $30/yr and go up to about $45/yr after the first renewal. I use Weebly for my web site builder. Just uses drag and drop templates. There are at least a hundred cheap providers and they all offer the same services. Just put a few names on the wall and throw a dart.

Forget the cost per yr.
Forget doing anything yourself.

You are in it to make money - not widgets - and the widgets you know how to make well/efficiently are not web stuff.

Outsource the site for 2-500 $.
Host it anywhere they recommed.

I actually was a pro in the sector, and used to run major traffic (5 million emails/mo, 3000 domains, 400 vpn routers, 13.000 user simultaneously, 32.000 ip addresses, etc).
I would not do anything web myself, today.

Much better results, much cheaper, by paying the suitable low cost guys for what they do 10x more efficiently than you.

The best business is what you dont do, even if you could.

Its like letting specialists ship/anodise/grind etc. when you are not that specialist.

I do realise you are unlikely to take my advise - and thats fine.
Its also common, in IT stuff.

(And graphics.
And mechanics).
And machining.

If its not worth spending 200$ /yr on, its probably best as a static business card online.
Web stuff needs work, to make results.

This... And whatever you do, stay away from Joomla, Wordpress, and other crappy insecure software.

Don't spend money on domain names and web hosting until you see that income will be generated from it.
In the meantime:
1) Get a Google Gmail account (free and very useful, robust and flexible)
Select a user name this is identical to your webSITE name, i.e. paulmachining@gmail
2) Create a Google SITE, i.e. a free website and structured wiki with all sorts of features, i.e.
sites (dot) google (dot) com/site/paulmachining/
You can also create linked sites in Google for Docs/Drive/Spreadsheet, Photos, and discussion forums, Groups
There are all sorts of tips, tricks and widgets to use once you have the basic array set up and working.

Wait until you actually need a domain for business purposes before you buy one and incur monthly and annual expenses....and work

I guess if you're Facebook savvy, you could create a free Facebook business page. A lot of people strictly use FB business pages as their website.

Thanks for the comments etc.
Looking at Google domains it looks like I could register the domain using Google and get the desired email reflection/forwarding included.
Then I can set up a Facebook page or web page a bit later. Also as pointed out may be best to outsource the web page creation, I have little interest in becoming an expert in this and there are loads of people that will build web sites for you.

Thanks

Previously Google would provide free hosting for your registered domain (other registrar than Google) but the URL required www. and the hosting was a Google Site. They also offered a free shopping cart with Google Wallet, the usual credit cards and PayPal money transfers so you could do sales. Maybe they still offer this if you use a Google domain but they have quit allowing domains registered elsewhere. Online sales with free secure shopping cart is a huge time and money saver.
