Can anyone recommend a paint pen brand for marking steel and general shop use? All I can seem to find are the art pens. I need to paint dirty greasy surfaces and want it to stay as long as possible.

MSC #43475060, MARKAL bullet point paint marker, light blue (light green is also high visibility). They have yellow, white and all the other colors. About five bucks each. You can also buy a big box of replacement tips. Yank it out with pliers and put in a new tip, hard to beat.

^^^We buy the same from Mcmaster. A few splashes with those is a big help keeping the A2 and the 1018 drops separate. Otherwise you find out after heat-treating.....

I have also found the Markals good, but my experience is that "dirty greasy surfaces" are never a good or reliable substrate for marking. One marking aid that I have found helpful is to lay down a preliminary quick-dry spray from white rattle can and then mark on that - hi-vis, and good distinction between various marking pen colors when color-coding.
