I need to make a few hairpin legs from 3/8" stainless steel and they want them polished. No specific RA requirements or anything like that, just needs to be shiny, and pretty reflective. Legs will be approximately 17" tall after they're completed, so the raw bar stock that needs to be polished will be about 34" + a few inches to cut to size, so figure 40" L. What's the fastest way to do this? I don't have a super well equipped machine shop, just a 15x40 lathe, and I don't currently have a working steady rest. I only need to make 4 legs. Any tips on this one?

quick way

one way to put a quick cosmetic finish on 3/8 rod is to simply chuck it in a cordless drill and take scotchbrite pads and spin the rod while gripping with the pad in the other hand. that's a two man job on longer pieces, but for 17" it would have been done in the time it took me to type this. red "fine" followed by grey "ultra fine" gives a near polish. start with 220 wet or dry if its scratched up.
