Trying to speed up production on a tensioner assembly. The adjustment knob that has 2 small set screws to hold it in place. The part is made from 416cd stainless steel. Currently the way I am making the knob is after reaming the shaft hole to the final dimension, I turn the part on edge to drill and tap a #6 & #8 holes. Then I go back and clean out the break thought and other pieces of stainless and clean up the surface.

My question is could I drill and tap the 2 smaller holes before reaming the shaft hole? My concern is by drilling and tapping the smaller holes first that when I ream the part, that the smaller holes will pack with chips and damage the reamer and or the finish of the hole itself.

I believe a spiral flute reamer is more tolerant of cross holes. I wouldn't worry about the cross holes holding chips but I sometimes get bit by things I didn't worry about. You may get a slight bur on the threads but for a set screw that shouldn't matter.
