I have a set of v grooved steel wheels that have a yellow zinc plating on them. I'd like to remove the plating with out damaging the rubber bearing seals. I can't remove the bearings since they are stamped into the wheel.

Will muriatic acid or vinegar damage the seals or the bearings?

Anything acidic should work.
Maybe try vinegar. For anything harsh, I would just brush it on so that you avoid getting it on the bearing.

You guys didn't notice; The OP is in Kalifornia, Probably the strongest thing he has to legally work with is Orange Kool -Ade dave [acme thread]
PS, might be cadmium plating.
