Repairing stripped extral threads

Wanted to see what methods if any I can try on this part to repair the external threads. The threads on a 1" steering stem from a Harley front end are stripped in the middle. The stem is welded in and removing it would mean re-chroming which I am really trying to avoid.

The portion of the threads that are stripped is where a thin nut that preloads the tapered neck bearings go, then a top clamp goes on over that and another nut at the top.

Do people ever lay down small beads with a welder and run a die over them?

Not sure I’d invest a lot of effort repairing that. It is one of the most critical components on a motorcycle. I would just replace it.
On a display bike, historical value, a weld up and re thread would probably work but the HAZ and weld hardness would cause me issues...

Make a new nut that includes the sleeve or that is just taller.

Make a bit undersized to insure less slop.

Also get a thread file to clean up what is left.

Longer area of engagement needed here.
