Well I feel pretty stupid but I got it. Thought about it long and hard and figured the only thing that could be stopping it from unscrewing was the draw bar was bottoming out on the collet itself. Held the knurled end tight and gave it a good sharp twist and the draw bar came apart! At least I was then able to bang the collet and adapter out of the spindle and get them apart.
What's happening is the draw bar bottoms on the collet's threads before it closes enough to grip the part. I think I got a bad 1/2" collet, none of the others do that.
Maybe this helps some other dumbass down the road...
