I am looking for an All Geared Lathe machine for my Employer. We mostly work with Mild Steel, Stainless Steel, Brass and Aluminium and our workpieces range from 20 mm - 400 mm in diameter. How do I know what speed range suits my needs?

There is no way to answer this question...
Not enough information
Find one with the widest gear ratios and add a vfd?
Your boss/owners should really be making this decision IMHO!

Look up recommended speeds and feeds for material and diameter you are cutting and what tooling you will use. A guess would be 50 to 2500 rpm.

For High Speed Tool Bits. Figure 4 times the Surface Feet per Minute divided by the diameter in inches of the work = RPM.

3/4" dia. and 1 1/2" dia. in your example.

Previous post suggested 50 to 2500 RPM. Looks good to me.

The Surface Feet per Minute.

Low Carbon Steel 60
Brass 80
Tool Steel 40
Aluminum 200
