Seems that it is extremely variable to get onto this site and get reasonable response time trying to view postings. My service is with AOl, has been for years. Now I know there has to be advertising, and I'm not faulting that. But, after clicking on to a thread, it will and most likely will Not connect. I have to reload, reload, and reload and reload again. Sometimes even leave the site, reconnect reconnect reload reload.

Other sites I visit are also hosted through v bulletin and they are much faster.

Any thoughts or ideas? DSL is not in my future anytime soon.

If you're using Firefox for a browser you can install an ad blocker that will speed things up. Not sure what might be available for the Microsoft browsers. The ad blockers do a great job of speeding up the pages without much of a downside.

No Firefox. AOL does allow some popup blocking, but not all. Not sure if Internet Explorer runs behind AOL. Presently, there is a Makino ad at the page top. and a PM ad on the left ogf the page.

AOL huh. They used to charge 24.95 a month. They acquired Netscape which
was charging 9.95 a month and the service is better. Try Netscape, you should
see improvement and it still costs 9.95 a month. You can use Netscape browser
too, or Firefox. I avoid MS Internet Explorer.

Added the next day:

Netscape has excellent customer support from young engineers based in India.
The basic service is 9.95. There is an accelerator option for a few dollars more.
You can try it out and cancel if it does not perform to your liking.

If you are not using Firefox as a browser, you should down load it and give it a try. Before using it to access PM however, click on Tools, then Options and then disable Java Script. Using Firefox and disabling Java Script solved the problem for me versus using MS Explorer.

I now use Firefox more often than MS Explorer and when I want to view something on YouTube or E-Bay (for example) I just enable Java Script and I am ok for access to them.

I installed a google tool bar (free) to the top of my page and it blocks most pop ups, even on the porn sites! ;)

I've been using Google Chrome on a couple Windows machines and like it very well. It's fast and simple. Pop-ups blocked automatically. Firefox has a lot more features and add-ons, but Chrome is excellent and fast.

AOL might be part of your problem. Today, with all the free email and anything else you could want, seems like a "portal" is just there to sell you stuff and slow you down. All you need is a connection.

dialup + firefox + add-ons = no problems

I've always been on dial-up; 40k on a good day with a strong tailwind, usually more like 38k.

Running the latest Firefox www.getfirefox.com with the NoScript and AdBlock add-ons and have no problems at all. NO ads visible on the site, and everything runs pretty fast.

I'm on here most of the day every day, so this is not based on just occasional usage.

I have dial-up and this site works the best of any that I visit.

I'm still on dial up at the warehouse and the site seems as fast as it did before the ads, with all the ads, most of the time. Ocassionally it does hang up and loads the header and nothing else, but that's pretty rare these days. So, it's quite ISP dependant apparently.

I couldn't imagine going back to dial up!
We had AOL with dialup, was costing us $24.95 plus a month, we set up DSL and droped AOL and it is costing us $29.95 a month, and now we have over 3g's of speed!

If you havent ever done this, this could help.
Go to internet options on your computer, click on delete temp internet files and delete them, just the temp internet files, leave the cookies alone, and it should speed things up a bit for you!

+1 for noscript. It makes FF as secure as it gets. It blocks code from downloading and running on your machine, unless you click to allow that particular site.
