My shop is in a barn, with general barn stuff inside. Several tractors, old car, lots of tools, etc.

So yesterday I was working on the mill. Barn door wide open (to let in the breeze and wisk cutting oil fumes out of my face), I'm deburring parts with a file just wandering around and look outside the doorway. Some kid is biking towards the shop very fast and looking around very intently, wearing those new funky expensive stupid looking gay shoes, new bike, etc. About 50 yards down the driveway, almost to the shop (long driveway) he sees me, shits his pants, turns around and bikes away as fast as he can. Probably trying to get his paws on whatever goodies he can get his hands on. Next time there will be a machete waiting for him, hopefully I won't have to use it.

Does anybody here have a problem with people (Presumably) trying to get their hands on your stuff?

I used to leave the door wide open going in for lunch, not anymore.

I don't know that anyone has tried but I have a Dakota Alert driveway alarm so that whenever someone starts to come down my long driveway I'm there to meet them. I also have dogs that bark like hell, and GOOD security cameras that run 24/7.

No more no less then it has always been. I never walk out of my shop without locking it even if it is only for a short trip to the house. Things can change real fast and I wouldn't want it open
If I were to leave quickly for some unforeseen reason.

I might try a pressure strip driveway alarm if I can design and make one. Might make a good project, everytime someone comes in the shop when i'm not expecting them they scare me to death anyway.

Well I think they're just fabulous!

I have cctv, and a trail cam, but the images are always pretty poor. I guess the cameras and signs are a deterrent, more than anything.

Theft takes quite a low priority with the police around these parts, so I try and keep stuff secured and locked.

Most of my stuff has my postcode welded/engraved/ painted on, but the determined could remove it I suppose.

It sometimes is a bit of a pain in the arse having to keep doors locked and stuff secured, but thats the 21st century UK for ya.

Metal theft was quite a problem in the UK, but I think the police are starting to take it bit more seriously, now that manhole covers are getting stolen along the streets

Small Town in Texas

Sheriff: Well... Bury him deep.

Our shop is located walking distance from the "hood".
From time to time you will turn around and see a crackhead standing there.
They either want a drink of water or a chore to do for some cash.

Twice we have had them walk right on in and go from one guy to another looking for a hand out...can't escort them out fast enough.

Once while working late and alone I turned around to see this shit head doing the ghetto walk right down the middle of the shop...he wanted
a drink of water...yeah right.
That was the last straw, now when I am alone I have a friend named Smith and his brother Wesson hang out with me as well as all doors shut and locked.
Sucks you have to lock your self in when alone to keep some shit head from walking up on you.

that's what they do in Jamaica and Haiti . lol

FWIW,

My old man kept the box his suitcase welder came in. He filled it with rocks and a nasty note then taped it all back up and left it in his barn.

Two weeks later he noticed it was stolen. Fkn box probably weighed 150#.

Farm fence panels make good security doors. The place I work has lots of the fancy roll up type and refers to them as "day gates". Lets sunlight and the breeze in but passers by can't just walk in on you. Also good for the "our insurance underwriter and OHSA doesn't want you beyond this point" type scenarios.

Had a pallet of battery cores outside the shop. Got to the shop after a big snow storm, some one had cut the fence out back and hoofed the majority of them up this steep hill to the fence and then????? I found a big old cat battery seems like they weigh about 140lbs part way up the hill where it was obviously dropped looked like he slipped in the snow and dropped the thing on himself. What they took was worth about 1000.dollars US hope his hospital bill was at least that much. I am really not a violent man, but boy I hate thievery. I might loose my serenity if I was able to catch some one...

So some kid goes biking down a long driveway then he turns around when you see him and your solution involves a machete?

You're fucking retarded.

I live in a very liberal town. That means that homeless people get treated with more deference and respect than your average citizen. That means there are a lot of 'sketchy' people generally loitering around. I get stuff stolen out of my front yard on a regular basis, well I did, I don't ever leave anything out front any more and never anything in my truck. Meth heads will take just about anything they think they can sell. Lights everywhere, no dark hidey hole spots or you will find them filled with used needles and other drug paraphernalia in short order.

The front large door gets opened the smallest amount of time absolutely possible. Sometimes I hang sheets over tool boxes and stuff first. You can watch the more advanced gang banger type thieves slowing down and checking out everything as they drive by. When I saw one group filming with their phone as they went around the neighborhood I pretty much decided anything that can possibly be brought in the side door will be. I have a nice 12 gauge shotgun with a staggered load of 00 buck and rifled slugs and hate to say I will probably have to use it at some point, that makes me sad. So far just yelling and acting like I am dialing the cops on the phone has scared away the 3am tire kickers.

Of course you can't be proactive aggro here because the other half of the 3am crowd is college students and normal folks going to the beach and just partying and having a good time. I think the thieves use them as cover. It's too bad really. Nothing like going outside at 2am to yell at two miscreants screwing with your car to find they are two cute drunk college girls taking a break on a walk home from a bar. I am young enough and single enough to not want to yell at them too much. :D

On second thought: ya, what a son of a bitch for wearing shoes with colors. Gotta be a real degenerate.

You should definitely design some device to alert you of something's presence on your drive, I doubt that's been considered before.

God damn kids on their bikes. Next time you oughtta bring the fight, tell 'em to keep off your lawn.
