I have actually tested the OPs app, and it's quite handy for piles of drills the students have jewed up in the crappy chucks they sometimes use, for the weird sizes in the US system. (Quick, what letter, number, or faction is 0.137?)

For metric it's less of an issue.

It works best with bluetooth calipers, which can be had on amazon cheap.

As for focus - I find on an iphone I have to get focus to the entry field on the web page, THEN activiate the caliper (because it shows up as a bluetooth keyboard and ios devices cannot seem to deal with multiple "keyboards" - even though that has worked in windows for decades....

Now, it's become fashionable on this board for people to be asses to various other people, usually for no apparent reason. Go ahead, keep it up, just don't complain to me when the whole resource goes away and instagram and youtube are the only resources left....

Youtube is great about certifying machinists.

At work I have 20 lbs of drills that a former co-worker use once or twice, then tossed in a bin. (he was a former GM/UAW guy) Many of the shanks are unreadable. I happen to know the company bought only fractional sizes by 64ths so that makes it easier. I've just been slowly using one of those drill sizers with all the holes punched in it to sort them out, re-sharpening them as I go.

Get ready to call me an azzhole,
but this an example of technology that is just not needed.
Have calipers in hand and look at the chart on the wall.
Smartphones are the personal pocket Jesus of the age.
Worshiped like a God! Addicted like crack.
How about some self-reliance and using your brain.
Heck, if you use the decimal equivalent chart long
enough, heaven forbid you might memorize some of it.!?!
What do you want me to say? Oh gee... Isn't that nice !
He made an app for that ! Now I can think less ! Hooray !
NOPE. Not gunna happen. I am poo pooing it. No trophy
from me. Yes I am an azzhole for expressing my opinion.
You don't have to agree with me. Free (semi) country.
We just don't need an app for everything. Stop relying
on a computer and start relying on yourself. Death by
1000 pricks, ya know. A little app for this and a little
app for that. Pretty soon you forgot how to add and subtract.
Let alone memorize the times tables and do long division.
If you had to survive after the EMP pulse, you would get
eaten by your neighbors. Sorry Charlie, Not playing your game.

What do you want? The guy has put in effort to make a little program that can help some folks. And are you not "making fun" of those who might use it?

Why shit on it? Walk the hell away if you're not interested.

Are you not using a computer or cell phone to access the Internet? Are you not using computers at work?

Almost everything I've done on a CNC machine I could have done on manual equipment. It just would have taken much more time, the chance of making mistakes would have been higher, and perhaps accuracy wouldn't have been as good.

I much prefer to take advantage of the "leverage" the computers give me to do my work better and faster. Why not here? Especially if you're older and eyesight isn't what it used to be, having a big display on a phone could be nice.

Why are you shltting on my opinion?
    You could walk away too.
    Instead you continue to argue.
You must have some agenda or a flawed upbringing.

Hi is participating in promoting reliance on technology.
I promote relying on one's self.
Get smart. Don't get technology that makes you lazy.
I see it as me doing a positive as protesting against the
dumbing down of the population by use of a devise that
eliminates the need to think. I am pro thinking.
People who think are harder to control.
People who don't think comprise a population who is ripe
for the taking over by a totalitarian regime.
So many people have stopped thinking and have give up their
soul for a phone in their pocket, they don't even have the
intellect to tell right from wrong. Polite from discourteous.
That phone has changed society for the worse. I will fight at
every turn of the corner to let people see the true light of
what it is doing to their friends and neighbors. I believe I
am going a positive by protesting another phone app that allows
people to think less. That is why.

    Well. That's an interesting perspective.

Do you work with computerized machine tools?

Doozer is an engineer by profession. I guarantee that he works with computers, most likely some CAD and some Excel spreadsheets.

FWIW, I completely agree with him about cell phones. This guy has a nice app, and I wouldn't shit on him sharing it. I run FreeBSD (secure server software) on the desktop after all. But I also wouldn't use an app. I prefer to use phones for *talking* and nothing else. The only reason I own a cell is for travel, and that wasn't even until 5 yrs ago. The *only* reason I got a laptop is to run SolidWorks. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't allow a Windows machine in the house. First time n 20 yrs, due to their shitty security record and 3rd world business practices.

repeating what i said before... keeping a process or a machine as simple as possible lessens the chance of "oh shit"
