Strange little bronze vise, purpose?

Jaws look bronze, the rest steel. What are holes for? Purpose of vise? Is about 8” x 2” x 2”.

I'd guess heating elements.

I also am thinking the copper-bearing metal is used for its thermal properties. Either to get heat into something or to carry heat away from it.

I agree with the first 2 replies ...my first thought was some sort of rubber vulcanising tool.
