Tapping 17-4PH?

I am going to need to tap a few holes, probably 1/4-20, in 17-4PH H1150. Is this possible with a good HSS tap, or carbide, or what? Only a few to do, but haven't dealt with the material before. Also, drill with HSS or cobalt or is carbide necessary?

It's hard, but not that bad. About 28 Rc / 277 HB

Still machinable with HHS, but you need a good lube. Our taps would probably be an Emuge. Go to their site and use their "tap finder"

A good HSS tap will work no problem.

I am going to have a few of hours of milling into these parts before the tapping, and didn't want to learn by ruining them!

I like OSG HyPro 7 in 316 SS with Moly-Dee. Colbalt drill works just fine or you could go with the OSG drills if you have a higher qty. Emuge does make a nice tap also.

OSG VC-10 is the best inexpensive tap for 17-4PH. Emuge is very costly.
Oil helps but is not necessary as water based coolant will work.
