trepan tool?

Hello friends, does anyone have experience in building (DIY) the trepan tool (drill)?

Probably not DIY

Three facet cutting tool and carbide wear pads for "head"

There is way more to it though - like reliably evacuating fountain of chips coming off that tool. This is done with high pressure coolant pump(s) and large volumes of coolant

Since the coolant is under pressure, you have to have rotating induction head(s) to get it to where the cutting is being done

This double end shop built trepanner cost Drilco a fortune in the 1970s

Nice tie ya got's there Mr. Oder....:D

The pix's are very helpful nonetheless. Thanks for posting them.

Back to the OP...poke around here for some pictures of the process:
Home – American Hollow Boring

We make a lot of tiller hubs as well as large nuts. We start with a solid bar and use these tools to core a hole in the piece. We have made them to core 3 inches to 7 inches.

It has a single carbide insert with a power coolant feed, so the actual cutting force is really not that great. The body of the tool is carburized so it will last.

The Cored drop comes out when the tool is retracted.

As you can see, we use these tools in our big Turret Lathe.

If the piece is longer than the tool, we simply Core half way and turn it around .

The drops ar what comes out.
