Unknown Brown & Sharpe Set

I picked this set up recently and have never seen one. Just curious what it is used for? Any insightful knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting point about the box:

It appears that the slots for the larger weights were cut from the solid block of wood but the slots for two smallest ones were made with a different technique that involved removing a larger piece of wood and using several filler pieces to create the two slots.
 
As said I’ve used similar, they appear to be the weights for a dart drop test rig ( you can google dart drop, it’s just a curved tip impactor dropped on a material to determine the material strength, say parachute fabric etc) that’s what it looks to me, nice spacer set anyway!

As already said those are a weight (more correctly a mass) set. We use the exact same in high school and college physics. The holes are for calibration and the slots are so they will fit on a hanger or a storage rack. Common materials are steel, brass, pot-metal, and aluminum. Aluminum for the 1-2-5 gram masses.
They are very common in an undergraduate Physics lab but, apparently, very rare anywhere else.

Not sure what B&S used them for. Calibrating a force gage? Hardness tester?

Those are the weights for a B&S yarn scale. Used in the New England textile mills when such actually existed. If you have an old B&S catalog, the scale is #980.

or there was a bad spot or a screw up or a other set and that's how they saved it or reworked it
 
The box is made the way it is for ease of manufacture. If you look at the top row all the pockets have the same corner radius. When you get to the second row the 5, 10, and 20 look to have each used a different cutter for each slot. When you get to the 1 and 2 slots it wouldn't have been possible to use a cutter as small as the slots are wide. That's why there is wood inset to make the 1 and 2 slots.
