I'm going to look at a Wells Index model 747 (I think) this weekend.

I could use a quick run down on dating a 747 or 847 model machine.

Where is the serial number located for the head and base?

Is there a serial number list available for Index machines such as the one available on lathes.co.uk?

Thanks.

That was quick!. Thanks for your help, Tom.

I assume the serial will be located on the knee between the ways as Bridgeport does?

Hope I'm not breaking rules digging up an old thread, but is there where one signs up for the Wells Index club?

I don't want to give too many details until it's delivered, but I recently bought what I think is a really nice machine. Probably 40 years old, but I think they "knew how to make 'em then;" maybe still do.

Also, is there a thread comparing the 747 to the 847? Not that it matters to me, but I was on the WI website before buying this one, comparing a few specs to a BP I was also looking at: from the website specs, I couldn't quite figure out what is different. I can start that thread if that's more appropriate than expanding this one.
