Was originally used with a CMM... in conjunction with a small IR refrigerated air dryer. Curious why the long membane filter part (which sells for over $1,600 !) would be needed when one would think the air would be dry enough with the IR unit alone. Or was it all about getting the ultimate clean dry air ?

Those are likely for getting rid of oil vapor- refrigerated air dryers/filters typically do not remove vapor level oil which can haze glass scales often used on CMMs.

Huh. I thought membrane dryers were specific to water vapor. And it does say "membrane dryer" on it, not "membrane filter".

The filter on the left is a KOR-35 model, which is specifically for filtering oil vapor. The membrane filter/dryer on the right is usually installed upstream to remove water and other contaminates (including some, but not all oil) and acts as pre-filter to the KOR, which is more efficient and economical installed in this manner as water vapor will overload it.
