I have been wondering if the Government will eventually have to put a mandatory shut down order on most businesses.
Driving around my neiborhood the other day I saw that the small auto repair shop by my house is still open and also a bicycle shop was open as well. In my opinion I would have a hard time calling either of these an essential business.

Full disclosure I am semi retired but I was wondering if it might be a good idea to shut down most businesses for a 2 week period nation wide to have a better chance of curbing the spread

In addition to fixing average Joe's car, Auto repair shops also run the tow trucks, and service emergency vehicles like police cars and ambulances, local and federal government vehicles, etc.
There are lots of other industries that depend on local repair shops

Who is considered "essential" is a very good question. My son is a mechanical engineer for Phillip Morris here in Richmond and they opened back up on Saturday. The last two weeks he has been writing guidelines to make things as safe as possible. These guidelines are as simple as one set of steps going up and another set going down. They are using go-pro cameras and headsets for communication between the fixers and the makers so they can describe what is wrong with the machines. I asked him how it was determined that they were considered essential. He said that although he was certainly not involved in that decision making it was probably due to money and addiction. Sudden withdrawal symptoms would range from not being able to take a crap to murder-suicide. I assume that would hold true to some extent with the liquor industry.

ok, i'll give you the auto tune-up shop, but I seriously have to question the bicycle shop. What about my other question about basicly shutting the country down for a 2 week period, very hard to do I know and probably more damage than good? And yes I do think they need to keep the beer and whisky flowing, Ha!

Bicycle shops are, indeed, essential to the existence of two large groups of people - the gay and the highly arrogant/pseudo-intellectual.

AS a serious answer to the thread, the restrictions are designed to stop spread. The odds of a small one man kind of operation contributing to the spread are limited. Not a big line at the auto shop, or bicycle shop.

I think the real issue is about requiring your employees to be there

Most states it is pretty loose

I do not understand why our governor has not banned vape sellers.. Alcohol and tobacco are essential, I suppose marijuana as well. Is pornography required as well?
Has Nevada closed the brothels or Casinos?

Alcohol will continue to flow, it is a source of tax revenue to the government. No way they forgo that.
Something the Feds learned from Prohibition. Wouldn't surprise me to see them jack up the rates to cover all the other lost tax revenue.
