What kind of finish am I likely to get?

Hi All,

First post to this forum and very new to metal work. Could use some advice.

I have just built the obligatory welding table and I had all parts 'sand' blasted and painted. I believe the blasting was done with aluminium oxide? (could that be right?). Anyway, everything was painted bar the top surface, but the surface finish on the top (after blasting) is not quite what I wanted. It has the texture (and look) of wet n dry paper, i.e. it is smooth, but a bit abrasive. What I want is a raw 'machined' steel top, but I am not sure how to get it. (Machining is not possible).

I have the following tools available to me: a random orbital sander, angle grinder with wire wheel (or pretty much anything else), a belt sander (which I think is probably meant for wood) and a burnishing machine.

I want to keep the surface as flat and smooth as possible.

Basically I don't want to make what I have worse (because it is not too bad), but I would like to make it better.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Al
