What Kind of Material for Thread on New Vice Design?

I have a customer that's developed a new heavy duty shop vice they are wanting to market. They are using 1"-8 grade 8 all thread for the screw. What would be the best material for the "nut"? We had some 4140 annealed laying around and tried that, but it does seem to have some trouble goulding. We put a big load on it and it got tight and once we had it worked apart the screw threads are kind of chewed up.

Steel on steel is never a good bearing longterm. Best bearing would be hardened steel screw and either cast iron or high nickel bronze for the nut.

Stay away from 60 degree V threads, they are meant to lock at torque, not slide. Go with an Acme or square thread.

perhaps , some virtue...

if they're going to make a commercial product, and they
can't spec the materials..... it will be a huge failure,
so don't bother until they get some answers as to what they're
trying to accomplish, business plan,pre-market etc...

mcmaster carr , or any other good source will have everything they need to sift thru to make it happen.

you need that mind for proto work. if this is to be
the next kurt or chick vise system..........the design
will prevail over sourcing screwstock.

a kurt leadscrew isn't particularly hard.

once you're on QVTV, you can spec any material you choose.
