Where to get ER50 collet blocks. Or over size collets with collet chuck

Hi All

I've been looking for the last few days to get some ER50 collets as I want to use them to hold round stock that I mill. I can find the collets but for the life of me I can't find an ER50 collet block or even an ER50 lath chuck. Well sorry the last is a lie I can find one of them but it's from China and would be about £90 delivered; that's a price I'm unwilling to pay for something that may be more miss than hit.

I had considered 5C step collets with a vertical mounted indexer or some such fixture. With this I'm worried that as their is no closer behind the step of the collet it may not support the Delrin piece enough. Also the limited gripping range of 5C collets is off putting too. I'd like to put raw stock in as well as second op stuff so having the range of an ER collet is better.

So can anyone direct me to an ER50 fixture of some sort than can be mounted directly to my mill table or clamped in a vice.

Cheers

UK based preference but will take from anywhere.

Something you will have to make yourself methinks from a reasonably obdurate steel.

ER 50 collet nuts are readily available so the hard part is done for you. Block merely needs a simple taper and thread.

Alternatively grab a BT40 or similar collet chuck. £60 - £70 from an OK brand. Chop the taper end off and seat the truncated unit in a suitable block. May need to drill out below the collet for pass through up to full diameter.

What about mounting a 3 jaw chuck (that you can get soft jaws for) on to a square or hex block of steel? ..........a lot more versatile and you won't have to buy another collet when a different job comes along

I really want specialised tooling for each product I make. I only make a few.

I do have some thin walled threaded pieces so collets are what I’m hoping for.

I’ve found some oversize ER40 collets that go up to 32mm. They’re from a UK company so I think that in an ER40 collet block gives me a great solution.

Hardinge makes indexing fixture and screw on collet closer and step collets that will hold up to 6 inches or more.
They call them 5c step chucks. It is a little pricey but like all Hardinge parts they are top of the line.
I have a 5c closer and step collet that takes pads that can be replaced they can hold about 4 inch dia and I think they were made by JFK company in California.

Hi,

I believe that RDG tools sell the collet sets er50, as for a chuck either you could consider making one, or as someone suggested buy a mill bt or cat40 or 50 and cut it down. Good luck. Yes I know Im late to the party.
