I have a chance at an older 1975 J head machine.
The table is pocked pretty bad the Y axis is galled and grooved pretty bad.
The original X axis feed servo doesn't work anymore.
Motor is 2 hp 575 volt(Canaidian )otherwise,
this machine was taken off the floor to make room .
So I know it was running although loose.
Spindle variable drive was rebuilt (in house),
and bearings aren't too bad. Any thoughts on how much I
could part with to aquire this beast?? Thanks

A machine shop aint a junkyard. A machine worn out as you describe is simply a coat of paint surrounding possibly salvagable parts and foundry scrap. Offer $500 for the head and $450 if you have to take the whole machine.
Unless you have the experience and resoueces as a machine rebuilder and the spare time to do the work of rebuilding, leave junky old machines alone.

I started my shop over a year ago and shopped around for used machinery. I saw lots of high prices junk. I'll never forget this bridgeport
step pulley, that a junky had. He wanted $2500 for it. I didn't want people to even see it in my shop. Used equipment dealer in Nortern Illinois get $3500 to $4500 for a 10-20 well used
bridgport. The high end machines have read outs.
I ended up buying a new JET mill and lathe. It is going to be hard to make money with junk.
