Never really done any gun work before, but I had a local deputy stop by and want some fluting done on one of his target guns. I guess it is a stainless Ruger Semi-auto. Not sure what model, but what I'm wondering is, what alloy are they made of and how hard is it?

Most custom barrel makers us 416R stainless steel for their barrels. It machines very well. Don't know what a factory stainless barrel would be, but I doubt it would be much different. The only exception to this (as far as stainless goes) is the Walther or Blackstar barrels. They are something called R700 steel, and they are TOUGH! Avoid them if you can.
