Hello,
Looking at a Birmingham YCL1340 engine lathe for rebarrel work. Looks like a good candidate for running the barrel through the spindle bore and indicating in both ends of the barrel. I'll call the dealer and ask the headstock spindle length. Anyone have experience with Birmingham lathes?? Thank you, Larry

These are just your run of the mill import lathe. The model you're looking at is made in Taiwan. A lot of these lathes come from the same manufacturers under different names. Quality on these machines is getting better all the time. For my money though I'd much rather have a good condition second hand Mazak, Colchester or Hardinge. If you hunt around you can generally find one with plenty of tooloing at a reasonable price.

Mike

I have been using a Birmingham for about 2 years, and it works fine. The headstock and chuck add up to about 20" on mine, so anything shorter than about 22" requires extra effort to do in the headstock. So, being lazy, I don't. Mike
