    There are already several existing substitutes for ivory, including some Delrin formulations that have an incredible resemblance to the real thing.

    From what I've read, the major advantage of the 3D printing material is that it eliminates the machining required. Apparently the material can also be supplied as a solid for those wishing to carve it to shape.

    I shall remain a "function matters, looks do NOT" pistol guy.

    But on synthetics?

    Some enterprising soul in the UK once got "done" in Court for selling the Hell out of surplus imitation Ivory umbrella handles from a tits-up'ed brolly factory.

    Casein-based plastic, so legitimately "milk by products".
    Court took a less than gracious view of him GRATING them however.

    Because he packaged, labeled, and sold the grated powder as Parmesan Cheese!
