The problem, real or imagined, is the lack of solid wood between the recoil lug and magazine well. At the receiver face, like a 700, is maybe better than a mauser or m70. Even mauser put a cross bolt on the military rifles shooting a puny 8x57

Tobnpr, that may be good practice, and I agree on a .308 Win, .30-06, etc, etc but the reason this is done on hard recoiling rifles, like the .458 Lott, .505 Gibbs, etc, is the recoil is so harsh, the stock can crack or fail, without this feature.
And the last thing you want when your hunting Dangerous Game, is your stock falling apart in your hands, just after you fired the first shot.

A bit like quality English gun engraving.....some dont even need to ask the cost,just order what they want,but I will never be one of them.
