Is grapevine charcoal good for making blackpowder? Is there any market for it? I may start making charcoal for a foundry furnace. I have a lot of grapevines I could char. Has anyone here done anything like this?

willow

I grew up in the sticks of kentucky and my grand dad made his own black powder for blasting stumps( this was back in the early 1920s) his recipe called for 75% saltpeter 15% willow charcoal and 10% sulpher he said the willow worked better than hardwood or pine

Thanks for that link GGaskill, what great read! I read the entire site and wrote the author. It directly addresses the original question asked and so much more. I highly recommend it to anyone curious about "black" powder.

The information about charcoal was rare and well done. I too now know why my adventures of 50 years ago weren't so successful. :o

It's all about the charcoal... ;)
