DOM does not denote strength. It is an acronym for "drawn over mandrel" tubing. I would guess that ordinary 01 drill rod would be strong enough since reaming doesn't remove very much material. If not, you can get prehardened 4140 rods 3' long from MSC and no doubt other suppliers.

Yes, drill rod was my first thought too but it needs a hole through it for the oil. I've looked at the specs on DOM & CDS engineering tube and none look impressive.
Yes, 4130 aircraft tubing is what I've heard since I posted the question. Something around 5mm x 1.5mm, Just need to find a supplier with a suitable sizing now.
