I have done it on a 9" South Bend. If the barrel will not go through the spindle then the limiting factor is bed length.

A 9"South Bend if the bed is 4' and have a steady rest. A heavy 10 with a shorter bed will work if you work thru the headstock.
I have a 40” bed and I’ve chambered a 25” finished length barrel between centers. Never paid too much attention but I bet it would be hard pressed to go much past 28-30” given the length of my machine’s tail stock.
Been my experience that it doesn’t take a lot of power to do barrel work. Cuts are fine for the most part.

maybe instead of what's the smallest you might ask what is the best I can get into space,power and weight constraints within my budget.
