After a bit of research, it seems the major barrel manufacturers use a minimum of .150” from bore.
Example:
.308 + .150(x2) = min barrel size. .830-.608=.222
Divide that by 2 and ya get .111” depth of flutes. I just rounded down to .100”
Hope this helps someone
Mr Tooley, I’m curious what parameters you use. I have dug up .150 min from bore from some of the barrel manufacturers. Seems like 1/4” ball end mills or 1/4” convex radius cutters? What do you use? Just ordered a mill and want to play with some scrap
Doing the hoop stress math for a .15" wall on a .308" bore gives almost 85Kpsi barrel stress at 50Kpsi bore pressure. A .125" wall gives almost 94Kpsi stress. How close to the chamber are you planning to flute?
