    Headspace is the distance from the boltface to where a cartridge headspaces.
    Rimmed cases headspace on the rim, belted cases on the belt and any other "normal" bottleneck cases on the shoulder. For the latter, I think headspace is measured from the middle of the shoulder.
    If headspace is excessive, a round can move back and forth in the chamber, if its too short, a round cannot be chambered.

    And not only can it move back and forth in
    the chamber ... but if fired can actually
    cause the case to separate .. Not a safe event .. and the rifle won't like it much either ..
