Maybe it was just a switch/sensor to ground. Agreed, though, that's not a very secure connection.

Ok,
So I went through the the diagnostic pages and tried contacting the tabs, and Voilà, it is the LO OIL which goes to 1 when the tabs are disconnected.
So this looks like this is for VF machines with a gearbox, and it's used to detect low oil in the gearbox.
Mine does not have a gearbox... so it could have been just this way from the factory.
