Deep hole drilling machine

I'm quoting on some new work and one of the operations is deep hole drilling.
It's a 1.375" and a 1.5" hole, both 15" deep.
I can't fit it into my VF2 so I was looking at buying a HAAS HMC of some sort to do the job.
Perhaps an EC-400 or HS-1...
Second OP is to face the end and put in a snap ring groove.
That will be the easy, but once again I think I'll need an HMC to do the job.
Material is a rectangular block of aluminum around 17" long so a turning center is out.

Any input would be appreciated.

How many of these do you have to make? Is buying a machine the best solution?
What about sending it out for gun drilling?
 
Maybe 20 pieces a year right now.
Going up to 100 pieces in the new year and possibly 500 the year after.
Currently the job is being sent out for gun drilling.
But the shop is 4 hours away which is driving up the cost because of shipping.
Bringing the drilling in house would allow for shorter lead times.
And more profit for me.

That's gotta be a pretty high margin part to justify $200k+ for 500 pieces "in the future". What's the total cost of sending it out, and can you do multiple orders at once to save on the freight? How big of a rectangle are you starting with?
 
The EC-400 only has 20" in Z so if your bit is 15" and the part is 17" don't think that's going to be much help. You could step up to a 1600ZT and get 40" but that's $200k base.

Can you just set it in a radial drill and pop the holes?
 
The gun drilling shop is currently charging $90 per hole plus taxes and shipping.
I was sort of hoping that I could extend the back end of the work piece outside the work envelope just enough so the tooling would clear.
Then drill and ream the hole to depth.
I can pick up a used HAAS HMC for $30K.
Some of the holes will be different depths so I like the idea of drilling what I need right here and then move it to the next machining station.
Accuracy of the hole is paramount. 0.001" over 12" is preferred.
The block is 17" x 4.5" x 2.5". There are other block sizes.

Before buying a machine, you may want to talk to a couple of machine tool salesman and see what they offer for this type of work? Then you would have a better understanding what type of machine would do a lower cost part? Just a thought.

Reconfigure a lathe as a horizontal boring set up. ?
 
I have not bought anything yet.
The machine I required wouldn't fit in the shop I had so I had to move first.
Then the pandemic hit and everything fell apart.
Now I'm moving after finally finding a decent place.
And yes, I'm going to buy something to do this job.
I've also found additional job(s) to do on the machine (still thinking HMC).
So I'm feeling good about this purchase.
I've already bought another HAAS VF2 to handle the additional exterior finishing.
