Extended z on vf4

Good or bad idea?

I’ve got some parts I will be machining for a company I work for and the largest part,a casting, is 13” tall,11” wise and it will need to get about 4 to 5” deep to machine the internals from the top and haas recommends the vf6 but, that’s too much machine for me right now.

So I was wondering what people thought about the extended z axis coupled with a vf4 bc that would give it the clearance needed for tool changes?

I don’t know what I was thinking bc I really don’t need the extra z and should have plenty room. Am I missing something

I don't see a problem. fyi you gain a almost extra 5 inches in Z with the older umbrella tool changer machines. I get a bit over 25 inches of z travel on my older vf3.

You will be fine with a VF4. We do a casting 15" tall and go in 8" deep on our VF4. Haas has a setting that allows the table to move to a predetermined position before tool changes. We have to do this on half of our castings. And this is without the extended Z(never new they offered it).
