So we bought a TL4. Why would you build a lathe that you cannot machine up to the chuck? The closest we can get the carriage is about 3 1/2 inches to the chuck.
That is what I was hoping, but to get anymore travel I would have to remove guards and figure out where the travel switch is. That specs say I have 80" of travel in the Z axis. That is what I am getting. So it looks like we will have to build a spacer to move the chuck out. What a piss poor design.
When we are limited to how close you can get to chuck we use a big boring bar mounted upside down to extend the OD turning length. Happens on our ST20. We have a smaller TL2 and can machine past chuck. I remember a Haas tech telling me about a safety setting that would make it so you could not crash into the chuck. He said they had gotten ride of the setting for the vary reason you are stating. Maybe go through the settings and figure out if there is such a setting.
