There’s been a few times I’ve run into feedscrew nuts that are shimmed into alignment when machine was new and got to wondering why this isn’t more common. Sure makes rescraping years later easier- no need for turcite etc.

Is it just that I haven’t seen that many machines and it is common?

I recall working on a Big 30" lathe years ago, over 50 years ago...lol helping my Dad. I am pretty sure it was at Electric Machinery in MPLS. It had laminated shims and you could peel the soldered layers of shim off as needed. I can't recall any cross fed screws lately. I have see a ground aprx. 1/8" shim under ball screw nuts. Maybe Standard and Modern did it in Canada?
