Hello,

Updating everyone in Europe or anyone wanting to vacation in a beautiful place and take a class.

BIAX Germany is sponsoring week 46 - November 12 and week 47 - November 19. We can teach up to 12 students per week, so we have some room. BIAX is advertising in Europe in several ways, so the sooner you register with them the better.

The classes will be held inside a Profession Machine Rebuilders shop owned by 2 brothers, Stefan and Franz Luftinger of MASCHRATUR OG. They have become members of our PM forum and have been contributing lately. They learned the trade like I did from their father.

Here is the latest I have received after asking Filipp what city to fly to.

Am 22.06.2018 um 13:42 schrieb Pachomow, Filipp:
Dear Richard,

closest airports are Linz and Salzburg, but they are small. The closest big airports are Munich and Vienna.

I have 9 people for week 46 and 2 people for week 47 so far.

(If you would like to attend, contact Filipp below)

Best regards,

Filipp Pachomow

The trip started today. I left Minneapolis at 6:30 PM and 6 hours later I'm in Reykjavik Iceland. Now a short 4 hour flight to Munich Germany where Stefan and Franz will meet me at the airport then drive 2 hours to Austria. Hopefully these clases I will be able to take a lot of photos. I'm not sure if anyone will be filming for a You Tube show. Hopefully someone will. Rich

Unfortunately I can’t participate due to several reasons. If you need a ü, here it is. You can copy-paste it everywhere. ÄÖÜ, too. Lüftinger. Österreich. Überseeflug, overseas flight. Änderung, change. All the best!

We have completed day 3 and I will include some photo's This a great class and have people from Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the UK.
Pic's L to R

Ringing (vibration stress relief) their straight-edges that both will tell you changed the rotation locations as we blued them up, tested the hinge took photo's and then rang them and blued them again and tested the hinge and on the first couple of rings they changed and after that they seemed to settle down.

The men and a photo on a way grinder in back ground scraping his straight-edge. He is from Switzerland Dalmeir CNC new machine tools who came to class to hone his skills.

Hi Richard.

Who's work was this?
242251d1542243116-austrian-scraping-class-novenber-2018-a-20181114_161121.jpg

It's the basis to a very beautiful pattern, He doesn't need a job in the Southern Hemisphere by any chance?

Be sure to tell him, I saw that, and I was impressed. (From this far away).

My best regards.

Phil.

Baily sends his regards to another dog taking the class. :-) Was that Rottler there that was in that early picture? I have run some of them but kind of like my G&L better.

That is Daniel from Switzerland. We is a machine builder at Dalmeir CNC Machine Company

Hey Rich,

Was wondering if you could share Daniel’s Biax settings and what blade width/radius he is using.
That pattern looks great!

Also, I am curious if there has been mention of pull scraping?

I'm thinking it's a 20/150 blade with a 60 radius, 3/16" stroke, and the key point is that he is scraping from right to left only, never going left to right. Very nice pattern indeed.

It's 3:30 AM...have jet lag and will add some more photo's As you will see we did some texting on Straightedges, The long get one we set the straight edge on to parallels on the airy points and checked the distance between the bottom and the plate with gage and it was withing .0002" then moved the parallels out to the extreme end outside and checked it again and with its own gravity it sages down .0008". Theo found that long one and a shorter on in a dumpster and he things they are from the early 1900's. we have had to sharpen our blades to a neg 8 to 12 deg.s as the iron is extremely soft, Or it could be we have some super nice blade grinders that sharpen to a mirror finish. Bruce has a diamond lap on his. Stefan and Franz have made one I will try to take photo's of later. I'm getting tired again and will post pictures and try to add some verbage too. Last day today of week 1.
Pic's L to R
Theo, Bruce, Danial testing different types of SE's, a couple testing the depth of scrape marks on a surface plate and Theo checking how deep the edge of the small SE' he scraped. He wasn't as careful as he should when he was scraping off the milling marks and let the blade trave lout to far and dug a hole. I think it was about .0008. Dang metric over here and I am having issues. Old dog you know. LOL

The brothers have some really nice equipment the large granite is brand new. One of those super flat French made plates. They have 2 that size and a number od smaller ones they bought with the way grinder from a retiring rebuilder. They have a sweet shop and test equipment. One of those electronic square testers is brand new. Their like so many of my past students, smart, great detectives and so so nice. Willing to close down their place of business for 2 weeks to teach and help me pass on the knowledge they learned from their Dad and learned themselves from trial and error. Franz and Stefan have been taking over in the afternoon when I get pooped out. Stefan demo'ed how to apply a wearstrip. They have a product that we saw at their class in Germany had last year. It is white and slippery on one side and the fabic fibers exposed on the other (i'll add the name later.) Oh note Ralph is holding Max up so he can get a better look :-)

Squareness comparitor. I have been using a large ground bar the last few classes it works so much better then a Starrett gage with the 3/8" dia. ball. The new plate with part of Bruce's Studer wheel head. One of the head stocks Dan's company makes. It runs on liner ways and he is scraping that surface flat and parallel. We ran out of steady benches and room on a surface plate, so we have it on a work bench to show how to do it back at his factory. He uses 3 points, but I showed him how to check the pivot point for gravity. He will have to make a new adapter when he gets back home.
PS: Matt, Danial has a couple of small pull scrapers he inherited when the "old guy" who retired at his plant had. He like many of those old timers never passed on their knowledge, so Dan asked me to show him how to use it. They appear to be more for scraping the corners low. I will try to take some close ups today. You can see one laying on top of paper in the 3 rd photo . I have to go lay back down...try to get a few more hours of sleep. Yawnnnnnnnn

It's like Daryl (other Bro) said...20-150 mm blade and about a 3/16 stroke with a 60 rad....speed about 5 on BIAX. One of my favorite sizes. I love that size and a 30-150 and surprising enough the one I was selling on Ebay. 15 -75 short stubby one with a 20 rad. I wish I had kept more.
