Lathe tailstock pins

I need to make new pins for my tailstock. These are the pins that keep the ram from rotating. The old one is not original and looks like mild steel and was not made correctly. The second one was missing altogether. What is the correct material ? I could do brass or mild steel again. Any thoughts ?

I like to look at 'which part do I want to wear', i.e. the easiest to replace. I'd use mild steel for the pin since you don't want to use something that will wear the retaining slots.

What Richard said. "Pin" alone - if even it is actually a 'pin' mount - can dig pockets / ripples into the keyway walls in a New York Minute off concentrated point of contact.

B****y nuisance to DIY the top bar of the Tee, but decent bearing area to prevent deformation is a given.

Not HARD, nor even complicated. 100% lathe work if no mill.

Saw and files - fire, anvil and hammer first, even, if no yet-functional lathe, either.

I did hint "tedious"?
