Default Pacific North West August Scraping class in Olympia, Washington

I am working with Richard King to coordinate a scraping class in Olympia Washington mid-August. We are tentatively scheduling the class to begin Wednesday August 12 and run through Sunday the 16th. These dates are not set in stone yet.

Seattle / Tacoma Airport (SEA-TAC) is about 1 hour North of my location. and Portland is about 2 hours South.

We have plenty of parking and my shop is well light, about 2k sq ft, with a upper floor that could be used as a meeting space. I will have some machinery available for inspection and possibly scraping practice.

As usual, please contact Richard King to make your reservation and discuss the costs.

Thanks Matt for the invitation. I have had several people ask about a class in the NW.
This can be a basic and advanced class to the students who have taken a class before. Once we get 8 - 5 day students we will accept 2, 3 and 4 day students. :-)

Rich, I emailed you but didn't hear back. Please check your spam folder for a letter from the domain nwnative.us because for some reason that one gets IDed as spam a lot.

I will be hosting at my home / hobby workshop located at 4209 Biscay St NW, Olympia, WA. Just minutes from Interstate 5 and Highway 101. The shop is about 2000 sq ft with plenty of open space and large workbenches suitable for the class. I also have a gantry crane, engine hoist and a couple pallet jacks to move heavy items. The metal working machinery is varied and includes some interesting, if not obsolete, tools such as a manual Norton surface grinder, a small Logan shaper, a Gorton P1-2 pantograph engraver, a small Burke no 4 horizontal / universal mill, a Bridgeport knee mill, a couple small lathes, and a power hacksaw. In addition to the metal working equipment, we have a few table saws, wood planers, a jointer, multiple drill presses, a few bandsaws and some welding equipment. I can't list everything as the list would go on for pages.

I have done some basic hand and power scraping on castings and machine ways using commercial and homemade scraping tools and I have a few Biax machines.

The shop has paved driveways with plenty of parking for everyone. We also have a shop restroom. I expect the weather to be comfortable with an average high in mid-August to reach 85 F but it may be warmer. The shop is very well insulated and we have many large fans available if necessary.

Olympia is the state Capital, and as such we have many visitors so there are plenty of local restaurants, activities and hotels available near by.

For overnight accommodations, Olympia has many choices within a few minutes drive. Including Best Western, Super 8, La Quinta Inn, Days Inn, Hilton Gardens Inn, DoubleTree, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express and even a few Native American casinos with very nice accommodations and good dining. Prices seem to start around $80 to $100 per night.

I've lived in the Seattle area all my life and have driven the I-5 corridor many times. And I have never seen the city of Olympia! All you see from I-5 is green trees. I have long had a secret belief that Olympia is just a myth. I guess this is my chance to find out. LOL

    Guys,
If you are interested in attending the class, please post here or contact Richard as quickly as possible. We need to fill a few more spots to ensure this class happens this summer.

I have just acquired a new-to-me 36"x48" granite plate for the group to use.

I’m in for the class. I did a class in CA and had a great time. Now I need to arrange time off.

Thanks everyone. I decided for the future classes I won't invoice anyone until we get 8 students signed up for the 5 day class. It is a pain if something like what happened when the pandemic hit and I needed to refund the money. I had already purchased the air tickets for the CA class and had to hassle (or Alex did) to get refunds. I again will be teaching alone for the most part as Alex has new jobs. He makes games from wood and sells them on Etsy. He just got an order for 75 units of some game you hammer nails through a slab of wood, he makes giant type Jinga sets, some game like bowling the Vikings played. He is a Realtor and just sold his 1 st house, he have 13 bee hives he attends and was going to be the 2020 Superintendent of the Bee building at the MN State fair, but the Fair was canceled for this year, but was rehired for the 2021 Fair. If Anyone has Facebook he has a page where he shows his hives setting in a pasture on my land. Oh and he also does Bee extraction when they decide to live in a house, wall or where ever. He has a video on his page showing when he recently did a house wall and an attic. So he has his plate full.

For those who are thinking of flying in, the Capitol Aeroporter is like a SuperShuttle that will take you from SEATAC to Olympia. That way you can have the option to not drive and bum rides to the venue.

I live a bit north of Seatac Airport and will be driving south past it to the class. Happy to provide rides if anyone needs one. May need mask :-(

I would love to attend! I can't provide a definitive yes or no until Thursday after attending a site meeting regarding a job that is supposed to take place around the same time. Hopefully it is prior!!
