Hi all,
I just was down in Oklahoma rebuilding parts of a Springfield Vertical Grinder. The machine is unusual, similar to a Bullard VTL but it has a grinder spindle. It has a ram that is fed up and down hydraulically and it rides on hardened ways with push - pull set screw /cap screw hold downs and gibs. The machine developed a jumpy jerk in the ram. The machine had developed stick slip, so I re-scraped the Bronze ram ways and adjusted the hardened hold downs and gib. See photo's. I also needed to replace some worn out 2-way hydraulic valves. I have been working for this company for 15 years and was told I can't retire. Chris Colbert and Mike Turner 2 of my students from Texas helped me do the repairs. Chris is working on lathe's. I also replaced the old lube pump with a new one that has a low limit switch connected to a Mack Truck horn...lol. They still have to rewire the lube pump as you can see the extension cord running to it in photo, but they needed to grind the valve spool seat. The company is J&S Valve and Machines. Note the valve they are grinding.
