How bad is it, and are you going to rebuild the entire machine?
I have tuned up several lathes with bolt on ways using shims. No, its not as sexy as reground ways. But depending on your patience and skill you should be able to remove at least half of the error with a few hours work. Then if you don't like it you are only out a few hours work and the results are completely reversible. The best part is you aren't out of a lathe.

Heard it was used mostly without the gap, so the carriage leading edge floated in air which didnt do it any good. Doesnt have removable ways. This will be a forever machine for me, so i want it right. Took it apart for paint and some repairs, and i know it wasnt the right order, so it will come apart again. I have backups, so not a big deal. Thanks to everybody for their help.
