WW2 Intruduction to Machining & Scraping

My first job was working for a machine repair company.
Was taught hand scraping first, couldn't even look at the electric scraper until boss was satisfied I understood exactly how to read the "spots".
I think I hand scraped for several months before he let me use the electric scraper, one could destroy a surface in a hurry with the electric scraper.

I really enjoyed that work. Was an artistry to it and I firmly believe that not everyone is capable of doing high spot scrapping. Not that one is stupid if he cant do it, I don't mean that in any way but its like drawing a picture, not everyone can draw.

One thing is for sure, if an apprentice takes to scraping and is good at it, he will most likely make a damn good machinist as well.

The first project we had to make in trade school was a set of drill drifts. Only machine used was a band saw to cut out rough shape then the rest was done with a bastard file.
I think it was a way for the teacher to weed out dip shits right off the bat because in the first week out of 8 in our class, two dropped out.
