I grew up on the bench version of that machine. I liked the counterweighted quill arm. The rack and pinion on the motor mount for belt tensioning was nicer than the main quill feed on today’s Asian drills. Long-haired operators need to be very careful of the exposed spline. The sheaves were cast iron, unlike the die-cast material of the Delta from the same era.
On the bench version, the long spindle was because of the moveable arm that held the rack pinion. That arrangement allowed the spindle-to-table distance to be adjusted without moving the entire head casting.
