Toolmaker surface and tool grinder for sale. Older model with rear drive and HEAVY cast iron base. Completely disassembled but complete with exception of the cast motor cover. Was in good running condition when torn down for cleaning and paint. Project stalled and it is in the way now. Ways have some wear but spindle is in good shape and runs smooth. Put together and use as is or do a little cleanup and have a great, versatile machine. Specially balanced 220V 3-phase motor and comes with one wheel hub and a pile of stones to get started with. I just want it gone so pricing aggressively at $300 as is. Parts are worth much more than that if you want to part it out. Base would be great for a mini-mill. 5x10 magnet available to buyer for additional $75. Looks like the one in the picture. Located a 15 minutes North of Milwaukee. Will not ship. may be willing to break up.

Hi:
I am interested in your grinder. Please post a couple of pictures of the actual grinder parts and magnet.
Thank you!
George

Ask the right questions ..Do the spindle bearing seem Ok.. Does it make a nice grind?
Can it grind a flat part? Agree just his opinion but at least something. See if he will throw in the chuck, or $50
You might take it off the legs to set better on a trailer, Wrap it up tight. Try to pick it up on a not raining time.

Make a nice road trip of it , perhaps staying over night, and going to a show/game or something..

You can pull the wheel guard face and do drills and end mill ends..with a simple home made fixture.

Crib and tie it off well so it can't roll if you slam on the breaks.
Take some extra money , likely he has other stuff.
Do your own due diligence .. don't blame me if its not up to par

Hi Buck:

Thanks of the tips! I have a bunch of straps and traps. If it works out, I get a surface grinder and my wife gets a vacation. Last time I did this I picked up a Harrison 10AA in Pittsburgh and my wife got to go see a bunch of museums. She still talks about the trip, Win - Win!!!

I always dreaded putting something back together someone else took apart, good luck to whomever buys it.

I'm not interested in the grinder, but I own one and I just want to put this here for those who might be interested and see the "putting back together" as a potential problem.

Do not fret, it's an extremely simply built machine. Don't get me wrong, everything is built well and stout. But the number of parts is very limited and it is pretty obvious where everything belongs. There is a bunch of places with exploded view of the the machine and parts. There is also a Yahoo group for this machine. It's not very active, but it is active enough that if you ask a question, it will be answered within a day or 2.

I'm not an expert on the machine by any stretch of the imagination, but, as I said, I own one that was extremely dirty when I got it. I took it all apart and I only started to put it back together like 6 years later. It took all of a Saturday morning I think, no big deal.

Good luck to the seller.

Just my personal experience on putting something back together others took apart. On friend who I bailed out a lot on jobs and he always had a "project" I would call a reckless hack. He often broke things taking them apart and stripped out fasteners. Another was an elderly friend who was had memory issues and refused help until he had created a major disaster. He was an airplane mechanic in the service for 20 years, but father time did not treat his mind well when he hit his 60's.

I actually just picked up one of these last night in similar dis-assembly state. Looks a bit rougher than the OP, but it seems to be all there. I think it was apart before the guy I got it from had it.

These grinders are perfect for a small home shop, but I think they get taken apart for even easier mobility. I had to use my engine hoist to get the base casting out of the pick-up bed, but once it was on the ground it could be muscled around. I think the hoist would move the whole assembly just fine though.

George,
wrap it up tight is no only to keep road dust out... It is to save the screws and parts that might fall o
I once saw a surface grinder top/table with mag chuck on the side of 8 Mile road..
Yes I left it there with hopes the guy might come back...

Well, a wise man once said, "anything for free is worth saving up for". It's not free, but about 10 years I dive in up to my ears. Gzig5 said he would email me a couple of pictures and I will go from there. I have a very small shop where I do stuff part time until I retire. I have just about enough room for it so if it looks OK I am in. I appreciate all the posts. One of these days I may have enough posts to not be Plastic. :)

Small machine like that one can practice scraping.
I have a small KoLee TC grinder that I have had for a long time but never checked it for being square and flat..Guess it likely would take little time to make it dead on..

Yes for much/most TC work a machine does not need high precision.

My son the mechanical engineer said much the same thing this morning! He said I haven't scraped anything since he was born and it will be a good machine to re-learn on. LOL!

Those parts will show you where they go. Basket cases are a weakness of mine.
The biggest was a skid steer with a blown engine skattered all over a cluttered garage.
$2,500 for basket case. Sick to my stomach about what I did the next morning.
$5,500 later it ran. $13,000 average used price. I had a fresh engine.
I dont look at my labor but should count it, but wont admit to how much.:rolleyes5:
Twelve years later I still use it. I had to make it run because my wife was watching. Not small change.
I have failed at reassembling more than one bargain because of missing parts or a lost cause.
A weakness maybe. Faith in your ability will make you or break you. Its helps you get acquainted with the machine.
I'll just say I also agree with the wise men that avoid these projects. I can't stop myself.

If it's an easy assembly why can't the OP be bothered to do it? Sounds fishy to me. Assembled it would have some value. In pieces not

Hi:
I have been wearing my "big boy pants" for about 50 years so I can handle it. I have talked Gzig5 and looked at the 10 pictures he sent me and made a deal. Best case I end up with a nice surface grinder that fits in my shop. The worst case is I am in the used parts business. The real up side is, my wife is excited to go see the Harley Museum, my 78 year old buddy (mold maker for 49 years) is excited to help me scrape it in and my son is excited about the project too. It looks like a win - win for me! Better odds then the casino and I have spent more money for a lot smaller return in satisfaction!

I bought one of these some years ago. On cleaning it up I saw the underside of the table ways were obviously worn concave for about 12”. Surprisingly it still grinds flat. I have squared up a number of badly worn Kurt vises with it.

Hi:
I picked up my grinder 4-22-19. Very happy with the deal, Greg was very good to work with and a huge help loading on my truck. Would gladly buy from him again.

I believe that I have one of these grinders that I would sell also if anyone else is looking for one. May or may not be the exact same model but similar if not. It was part of a package deal and I don't really have a need as I have a slightly larger Doall. I just recently moved it from my shop to a different building up on a rack. Could probably snap a pic or two if there is any interest. I have never ran it but I believe it was still being used when I got it.

Jeff
