For Sale: 1936 South Bend 9" (C9W10JR) (Central Ohio)

I'm helping my dad sell his 1936 South Bend 9" lathe. He bought it in the 50s from a high school in Indiana and after some use it has been in storage since the 70s. There's rust and will need some cleanup, so I'm not sure of its working state. The lathe will need to be picked up in the Lancaster, Ohio area. Asking $380.

I wish you the best of luck in finding a seller, I mean that honestly. I hope you find somebody that can put that machine into service and carry on your father's legacy! That being said, I think your price is a bit wishful. That appears to be a 9C model (no quick-change gears and no auto-feed). It is likely the least desired model lathe ever made by South Bend and it's in pieces (although most pieces do appear to be present). I gave $330 for my fully-functionl model 10K (basically a 9A model) and it was only an "ok deal". As it stands, you're going to have to have something that sets that apart from the multitude of 9" lathes out there for under $500 that are still functional. Do you know enough about it to inspect the bedways and give an accurate representation of bed wear? If the bed is really low wear then it has some value, either to somebody wanting to put it back together, or utilize the bed to combine with another machine that has bed wear/damage.

The box of cutters looks to mostly milling machine cutters that wont be of any value to the lathe.
Do you have a milling machine also, or other stuff for the lathe? Show us pics of anything you have questions about.
Looking at the pics in the link there is some sort of rotary table for a mill, (the large rusty 4 jaw "chuck "with crank handles under it). That looks like it has a posi-traction unit sitting on it. What it fits?? Both of those are probably worth money by themselves.
I think I saw a chasing dial on the carriage for cutting threads.

Was looking for the take up nut and bull gear cover, figured those would likely fit? If not, back to searching ebay.

Price dropped to $250. I don't have any interest in parting it out. It's a four hour drive from me, so I'm not easily able to check bed wear and tbh I wouldn't even know how to judge it. This is one item of two which is keeping us from getting out of the storage facility because I thought it was more valuable. It almost makes more sense to leave it and let the facility auction it for lower than $250. I found the receipt last weekend which said he paid $280 in '66. It's a real shame it didn't appreciate in value any way.

That's the nature of machine tools. They almost never appreciate. Tools that sold for tens of thousands in the 50's sell for just thousands today.
