    Default Fritz Heckert & MIKROMAT

Machine tool production in Soviet controlled East Germany was centered in Chemnitz or as it was renamed
Karl Marx Stadt. Chemnitz had a legacy of quality tool production dating to early 1800's. The communist
central government in 1951 consolidated about 35 tool producing firms and named the new entity Fritz Heckert
Works. Heckert was a brick layer and more importantly, one of the founders of the German communist party.
After break up of the Soviet Union, Heckert Works fell on tough times and was acquired by Swiss firm
    Starrag Group in 1997.
One Heckert branded product line was Mikromat. Jig bore, jig grinding and thread grinding machines were produced. Starrag did not acquire Mikromat. Starrag already owned SIP. But they chose to keep the Heckert name attached to 4 axis horizontal mills.

Mikromat continues as an independant producer of impressive 5 axis jig boring and grinding machines.
